Rose disaster..

It's been raining almost non stop for 22 days and the temperatures have been unusually warm for may, this is the recipe for rose disaster and they are succumbing to blackspot and other high humidity related diseases

flowers look sad hanging down

Many defoliated rose bushes with diseased yellow canes (and overgrown lawn!)

Diseased foliage :(

But not all roses get sick! Parure D'Or foliage looks perfect as always

Honoré de Balzac is another rose that rarely gets blackspot or powdery mildew

But the surprise were the David Austin Roses, they were planted in February, they never showed signs of diseases and grew and bloomed marvellously! Unlike most hybrid teas they look wonderful after 13 inches of rain ¿are they the rose miracle I've been dreaming of for so many years?

In the pond the unusual warm days "woke up"  the water lily Barbara Dobbins!

See you next time!

  1. Oh no, Marcelo, it's really sad to see the results of the warm and humid weather... but fortunately the post ends on a happier note. In those difficult conditions you can see well which varieties can work in your climate.
Also here it looks that cloudy and rainy or unusually dry periods can be longer than before, but in our climate there haven't been major disasters yet.
Trying to send you some cool and sunny weather! :)

    1. Sara, it's still raining as I write this.. roses can have two good blooming moments in the year here: early spring and early fall, but it depends on rain, if weather is too rainy the display will be ruined and that's happening now, I was hoping for a not so rainy fall to enjoy the roses after a terrible summer, but it didn't happen :( Have a lovely and sunny day!

  2. Hello MDN,

So sad about your roses! Here we could need your rain. 22 days with rain is too much!
I hope you will get dryer weather soon!

    1. And it's still raining Marit, it's getting very tiresome. The forecast announced a sunny weekend and I hope it is right. Have a wonderful day!

    1. Nadezda, roses get sick very often here, I should be use to but I can't whenever this happens I feel sad :( when rain stops I will spray with anti-fungal solution and will cut black/yellow canes, this is the most feared disease: dieback. I hope not to lose more roses now, summer was terrible enough! Have a lovely day!

  4. Oh gosh, poor roses and poor Marcelo. Hope they will recover... maybe a good cut can help... not sure about it. By the way, milk is good against mildew, if that is one of the problems. Just spray it on the roses... it smells a bit, but it helps.

    1. Alex, roses will bounce back when weather gets drier although some might not make it, I always lose some roses in the rainiest months. I spray them with milk to prevent mildew, I'll do it when the rain stops, sadly it continues as I write this. Have a great weekend!

  5. I hope the David Austin roses do indeed prove their mettle in your climate. Sadly, neither of my 2 David Austins appears to have enjoyed the heat spike that occurred when I was traveling but then they weren't provided any extra water to help them along.

    1. Kris, for now the Austins are faring very well, I am happily surprised, unlike hybrid teas I think they cope well with high humidity if they stay this way I will have to contemplate a big rose replacement in the garden. Have a great weekend!

  6. I’m sorry to read about your roses Marcelo. What an enormous amount of rain you’ve had, while we’ve had none. The roses will come back again, I’m sure after their winter prune and rest.

    1. Jane, the summer was unusually dry and I wished for rain but we got too much of it. Now I have to wait for dry days to spray the roses, remove dead canes and diseased leaves. Have a very nice weekend!

  7. Oh, that hurts to look at the poor defoliated ones! Surely they will recover. A good spray to keep them clean and you will have some beauties in a few weeks. Well, I hope so anyway!

    1. HB, It's really sad when this happens because I love roses so much! I will begin to spray and remove all fallen leaves tomorrow, there is lots of pending work in the garden after so much rain. Have a great Sunday!

  10. O que dizer das rosas, mesmo encerrando o seu ciclo
    sempre serão lindas.
Poda-se para na próxima floração surgirem ainda mais belas.
    Boa continuação de mês.
