Summer, blooms and bees

Despite the unbearable heat of these summer days ( 40 C- 104 F yesterday) and sudden downpours that only make things worse I have a reason to smile: The lotus are blooming!

This flower was so high up! I needed a chair to take the pictures

Mrs Perry Slocum day 1

Day 2

Day 3

Another Mrs. Perry Slocum plant

And yet another one (made lots of new plants in winter when I divided rhizomes)

Bees love the Lotus flowers! (and I love bees!)

The following pictures are a big achievement for me: I've been trying to take pictures of this big bumblebee for months and the lotus finally gave me the chance I needed!

The bees also love Roses

Bee on Ligustrum sinense

Roses without bees

Hibiscus syriacus is blooming

Hibiscus sinensis (I think I never posted pictures of these varieties before)

The water lilies continue blooming.. I often say I hate summer and my climate in general because I can't grow peonies, tulips and other temperate climate plants but when I see the all the water lilies I can have here I feel a bit better! (I'm still waiting for the real Queens of the pond.. shy blommers but spectacular! you'll see them)

Mirabilis Jalapa is beautiful but can take over easily if left unchecked!

See you next time and wish you a happy new year!

  1. Oh, Lotus! That's a plant that isn't even on my dream list but only because it seems unattainable. Actually, they will grow here (I've seen them at The Huntington Gardens in San Marino and Seaside Gardens in Carpinteria) but water to grow them in is a key roadblock.

    1. Kris, the lotus appreciate sun and heat but they need lots of water and space at least the big varieties, but there are some smaller varieties that can grow in holeless plantpots, I have the small lotus Chawan Basu, very beautiful maybe it might work for your garden.

  4. Your garden is fabulous.
Roses are lovely... but they can't compete with your lotuses, hibiscuses and waterlilies. Thank you for the gorgeous photos!
Thank you for your comment today. About "our" squirrels, I would say they are cautious, an justly so. They are wild animals, and we don't for example try to hand feed them. Once one of them had entered my parents home through a door left open, but fortunately found its way out soon. :) They are cute and funny.
I hope the weather will become cooler there. Happy New Year! ♥

    1. Dear Sara, as pretty as Lotus flowers ,hibiscus and water lilies are I don't think they are rivals for Roses, I wish the climate were more conducive to grow roses here. Unbearable heat won't subside till late march or april...I hope you have started the new year with lots of happinnes and joy!
