The rival Queens

It's often said that the Camellia is the Queen of Winter and the Rose the Queen of Springtime but in my climate their reigns overlap! The result is a Regal clash! When I was a child I was spellbound by a Camellia in the garden of my school, it was planted next to a  beautiful red Rosebush and I always imagined them as rival Queens, like two Operatic Divas on stage trying to outsing one another! Something like the duel of the Queens in Donizetti's Maria Stuarda!

The Camellia and the Rose: ¿Who do you think is more beautiful?

  1. What a fascinating and fun idea, a Rose and a Camellia trying to outsing each other!
It's difficult to choose a favourite, both have their charm and so different kinds of varieties, but perhaps I prefer roses. :)
Thank you for your interesting and important comment today. I should have mentioned Leon's passion for Baroque music.
    Have a lovely weekend! xx

    1. Hello Sara! Mrs. Leon is a great sponsor of Baroque performers, God bless her for that! It's indeed hard to choose between Roses and Camellias.. today I say I prefer Camellias because they grow untroubled here!unfortunately Roses get all kinds of diseases in this climate..

      Un caro abbraccio!

  2. Impossible to choose! And they're both thirsty divas in my climate.

  3. I would probably prefer roses, too. I don't often can admire Camelias here. They are not that spreaded in Germany. But they do look nice.
By the way, whenever I read about Camelias in your blog this famous movie from George Cukor 1937 "Die Kameliendame" with Greta Garbo in the leading role comes into my mind.

    1. Hello Sigrid! I love Camellias madly as much as I love Roses but Camellias are definitely better suited to my climate than Roses, it's a pity that Germany seems to be too cold for them, they are splendid plants but don't tolerate long cold winters. I'm glad you mentioned that movie with Greta Garbo for I love it, actually I love all her movies but that one has a especial place in my heart because of my love for Camellias! Have a great week!
